Talent is not necessarily tied to age. An hour of watching American Idol, or any variant of the show, can easily confirm this. Still, when I encounter a child with the musical range and onstage presence of a seasoned performer, I can’t help but be amazed and wonder about what a powerful of successful entertainer that person can eventually become. I found myself thinking about these very things after hearing the music of the eleven-year-old sensation, singer/songwriter Penelope Robin.
Her talent is astounding. For such a young person, what she’s already accomplished in her field is what most adults trying to break through the ceiling can only hope for. And while it may seem like she suddenly burst onto the scene, she’s actually been cultivating her talent since the age of five. To me, those six years seem like the blink of an eye; to her, this time equates to more than half of her life. Robin’s abilities allow her to hold her own while performing with other superstars, like Phil Collins, Karol G, Yandel, and Fat Joe, all of whom she’s already performed with.
Aside from Robin’s powerful voice, her music videos are just as catchy and attention grabbing as the ones released by a young Taylor Swift. The production value, trendy references, and pop culture aesthetic of her videos convey that she understands what people want to see and she’s not mistaken, having received over ten million views on YouTube. Clearly, she’s doing something right, and I hope that she continues to grow in both skill and popularity. I also hope that she’s got a good team of people around her, who can keep her grounded as her fame inevitably takes off.
What’s nice about Penelope Robin is that she does seem rather down to earth. Aside from making music, which is generating buzz in and around the country, she’s involved in a number of philanthropic projects. There’s her #AdoptYourBestie initiative and, most recently, she’s partnered with EcoPod, a company that claims to be an “alternative to single-use plastics for home and personal care products” to launch a new song, “World Full of Love,” which was successfully previewed for Earth Day this past April.
At this point, I think it’s safe to say that Penelope Robin is going to accomplish a lot in her music career as well as other creative pursuits. To check out other material from the rising artist, check out her website, YouTube channel, and iTunes.
