Music Review: Crystal Calm Volume 2 by Theda Phoenix

Theda Phoenix
Theda Phoenix

Plenty of music is created for entertainment and enjoyment. But there are other types of music, ones that serve a purpose that we may not think of right off the bat. Commercial music is one, healing music is another. Applicable for both recreation and health, the latter straddles the line between two different but deeply related industries.

Theda Phoenix creates sounds that lie at the intersection of music and meditation. Based in Vancouver, the singing bowl performance artist is primarily inspired by the majestic nature of British Columbia, where she was born and raised. Unsurprisingly, the appreciation she has for her coastal upbringing is infused into her work, including her latest release, Crystal Calm Vol. 2.

Whether it trickles, falls or flows, water (recorded live by Sam Ryan, of India's Ganges River tributaries) makes an appearance on all nine tracks on the album. The accompanying singing crystal bowls are made out of quartz; they come in different sizes and are set to different pitches and frequencies. Phoenix adds the final touch by harmonizing her vocals with the bowls.

Her video for “Crystal Currents,” which you can stream here, is simple but pleasant to watch. Featuring Theda Phoenix, it shows the artist in her element: playing the singing bowls,  frolicking by a seascape, floating in the water, and meditating amongst vegetation. All in all, it does a great job at depicting what audiences can expect from the rest of Crystal Calm Vol. 2

"I believe in the transformative power of music to transcend boundaries and touch the soul. With this music, I aspire to create a space for introspection, connection, and healing,” explains the artist in the album press release. To her, the record is “a sonic gateway into a deep inner journey, a multi-layered creation utilizing unique binaural recording technology.”
